EVENT: Soul Sessions - 2.08.08 (hosted by Tunji)

The day I moved to LA in August of ‘04, I immediately wanted to find out as much about the local hip hop scene as I could. I logged onto Craigslist and searched the community section for “hip hop,” and a listing for a live open mic came up first. It sounded dope, but I didn’t have a car at the time, so I figured I would try to make it if it was within walking distance. Luckily, it was only a few blocks from my apartment, so I came through and rocked the mic at the very first Soul Sessions. A few days later, I got an email from the organizers asking me to come back and host the event. Soul Sessions was my introduction to the LA hip hop scene, and I led the MC lounge there every other Friday for nearly two years. It became kind of a home base for my circle of MC and producer friends in LA.

It’s been another two years since I’ve hosted Soul Sessions at the Grand Star, and I’m going back this week for the re-introduction of the MC lounge. Soul Sessions was like rap bootcamp for me…If you never attended, it was basically an open mic with a live band playing music, me hosting and freestyling, and sharing the mic with other MCs who came through. I met a lot of my close friends and music partners through Soul Sessions, and the whole experience made me a much better performer, freestyler and overall MC. Definitely looking forward to rockin with the band again. See you there this Friday.
