Common & John Legend preview their new albums

Y’all don’t even wanna know how long it took me to find this picture.

Anyways…G.O.O.D. Music affiliates John Legend and Common are both putting out new projects in the forthcoming months, and it seems like they are both headed in new musical directions. John Legend speaks about his untitled new project here. His last two albums are personal classics, and the first single from his new project will be “Green Light,” featuring Andre 3000, so that’s a good sign.

Com’s album is called Invicible Summer , and he gives a preview of the project to Billboard here. I heard the same tracks Billboard heard about two weeks ago and it’s definitely a departure for Com. A lot of his core fans are gonna be pissed, but to me it’s some fresh music (for the record I also really dug Electric Circus). The album is entirely produced by The Neptunes and Mr. DJ (OutKast’s DJ/production partner). The Neptunes joints had a lot of synths and heavy percussion, and the Mr. DJ tracks are really lush, with swirling, airy, organic sounding production. I remember being particularly taken aback by how ill “Changes” (produced by Mr. DJ) sounded…just vintage introspective Common. The homeys Chester French shine on the hook from “What A World,” and the first single “Universal Mind Control” (produced by the Neptunes) might end up being the biggest song of Com’s career. I also heard another joint that Billboard didn’t get to peep - a gritty Neptunes produced track called “Sex Is Sugar” which again featured some really hard synth lines. It’s going to be interesting to see how Com’s core fanbase perceives the album, but I’m definitely looking forward to it.

So is this going to be along the lines of “Electric Circus”? From what you heard, it ain’t super eclectic is it? The synths sound good, I would love to hear Com over a DJ Toomp beat. Good looks on the info.

parts of the production definitely reminded me of EC….some people are gonna be mad. but the rhymes and music are still superfresh.

EC wasn’t THAT bad, I was def. feeling the Neptunes joints, but some of it did go over my head. Haha. Ay yo, by the way, I just started listening to the “So Far: The Collection” & I can say I am fan already. That joint with Kno is bananas, I like how they flipped that sample. Com used the same sample, right? Just wondering, but def. keep it going!
